David S. Long is a native of West Virginia, born
in Kimberly in 1933 and raised in the Montgomery
area. He attended school in the area and graduated from Montgomery High School in 1950. Upon graduation, he enrolled at WVU Tech. While at Tech he participated in basketball, golf, and men’s chorus. As a basketball player, he was coached by two of the greats of Tech history, Hugh Bosley and Neal Baisi.
Upon graduation from Tech, Dave entered into
the United States Naval Officers Candidate Program. He left the Navy in 1959, acheiving the status of Ensign. He then enetered into private business as a life insurance agaent for Mutual of New York. This was the beginning of a long and successful career in investments and consulting in finance. From 1962 to 1980 Mr. Long was an investment manager, and served as a consulate from 1980 until 2007. He is now retired and living in Charleston. Dave has six children and twelve grandchildren.
Since leaving Tech, Mr. Long has been an avid supporter of the school in many ways. He has served as President of the Tech Alumni Association, Chariman of the Tech Scholarship Committee, Vice Chair of the State College System, and a member of its Board of Directors for 16 years. In addition, he served on the Tech Foundation Board for 32 years, was Chairman of the Baisi Center Fund Raising Committee, and a member of the WVU Tech Advisory Board. During this time, he served on several Boards in private business.
Over the years, Tech has bestowed many honors upon Mr. Long. Among them are Alumnus of the Year (1988), Distinguished Service Award (1991), Presidential Citation (1996), and the Distinguished Former Player Award (2005). The Alumni Center at WVU Tech has also been named after Mr. Long.
Tonight we honor David S. Long for his many contributions to Tech. He has been generous with his time, his efforts, and his resources over the years. Because of his unselfish service, we thank and induct him into the Tech Athletic Hall of Fame.
