MONTGOMERY, West Virginia — With the game tied and just a second remaining in regulation, junior
Elizabeth Evans pulled down the offensive rebound and released a shot at the buzzer that rattled around the rim before falling to give WVU Tech women's basketball a 61-59 victory over the University of the Cumberlands (Kentucky) Saturday afternoon in the Baisi Athletic Center.
The game-winner capped off a season-high game for Evans who scored 15 points on 6-for-9 shooting from the field in addition to two rebounds and a steal. Senior
Courtney Fisher led the offense for the Golden Bears with 17 points towards a double-double effort with a game-high 15 rebounds. Fisher also posted four steals and an assist.
Joining Evans and Fisher in double figures for Tech were freshmen
Alexandra Combs with a career-high 13 points and
Savannah Shamblin with 12. Shamblin, who also dealt out a team-best six assists, pulled down seven boards while Combs had four steals and three rebounds.
Shamblin has posted double-figures in seven out of nine of the Gold and Blue's contests and currently holds the No. 13 ranking in NAIA DII averaging 4.375 assists per game.
Freshman
Breanna Propst pulled down five rebounds for WVU Tech.
As a team, Tech shot 39.3 percent (24-for-61) from the field and 47.4 percent (9-for-19) from the free throw line. The Golden Bears held a 40-35 edge in rebounds while forcing 24 turnovers that was credited towards 16 of their points.
Cheyenne Madded led Cumberlands with a game-high 20 points to go with ten rebounds.
The win moves the Golden Bears to 4-5 this season while the Patriots are now 6-4. Tech returns to action December 8 for a KIAC match-up at Indiana University East in Richmond, Indiana for a 6 p.m. tipoff.
