Women's basketball end season at No. 22 Rio Grande

RIO GRANDE, Ohio -- WVU Tech women's basketball dropped an 80-69 decision to No. 22 University of Rio Grande in a River States Conference (RSC) Tournament semifinal to end their 2017-18 campaign Saturday afternoon. The Golden Bears finish their season 19-13 overall and 12-5 in conference play while the RedStorm move to 29-3 and will continue their season in the final of the tournament.

Tech had four Golden Bears hit double figures including a team-best 14 points from sophomore Katelyn Byrd who also pulled down six boards to lead the team.

Junior Alexandra Combs poured in 12 points while recording three assists, a rebound and a steal. Senior Zjhane West finished with 11 points to go with a team-high four steals and a rebound.

Sophomore Laura Requena rounded out the top scorers for Tech with ten points. Requena also had three rebounds. As of February 24, the Madrid Spain native holds three rankings in the nation (NAIA DII) including No. 23 in offensive rebounds per game (3.323), No. 23 in total rebounds (251) and No. 38 in total rebounds per game (8.097).

Also scoring for the Gold and Blue were freshmen Alexandria Gray (8) and Brittney Justice (7), junior Savannah Shamblin (4) and sophomore Logan Dudley (3). Shamblin dished a team-high five assists in the loss.

For the game, Tech was held to 39.7 percent (23-for-58) shooting from the floor while Rio Grande shot 58.8 percent (30-for-51).

The RedStorm were paced by Alexis Payne who had 18 points and six rebounds while Jaida Carter finished with a double-double of 16 points and 11 boards.

The Gold and Blue finish their season with three top-ten rankings in the nation (NAIA DII) as of February 24 -- No. 5 in total blocks (140), No. 7 in offensive rebounds per game (15.645) and No. 9 in blocks per game (4.516).
