CORBIN, Kentucky -- WVU Tech wrestling opened its 2022-2023 campaign at the Pepsi Patriot Open hosted by University of the Cumberlands at The Corbin Arena Saturday.
Sophomore
Ryan Turney led the way for the Gold and Blue, earning a sixth place finish at 174 lbs. The Churchville, Maryland native won by fall (0:38) over Booker Colson of Brewton-Parker College before a major decision (14-4) against Matheos Veiga of Indiana Tech.
At 157 lbs., freshman
John Grundmeyer earned 5.5 team points with a fall (5:00) over Lucas Saunier of Lindsey Wilson College.
Also collecting team points (2.5)Â for the Gold and Bue was freshman
Maxwell Underwood who grappled at 184 lbs. to record a fall (2:36) against Zachariah Garabrandt of University of Tenessee.
The Golden Bears will return to the mat Sunday, November 13 when they travel to Danville, Virginia for the Averett Open.
