Golden Bear grapplers earn W over Pikeville in tri-meet

MIDWAY, Kentucky -- WVU Tech wrestling traveled to Midway University Saturday for a tri-meet to face the host, University of Pikeville and Cumberland University. The Golden Bears earned a 36-12 victory over Pikeville while falling to Midway 19-35 and Cumberland 9-43.

Senior Isaiha Casto is still undefeated at 6-0 this season after defeating two opponents Saturday. At 184 lbs., Casto earned a major decision of 18-4 over Midway's Trace Insaleco and a Fall (1:20) over Cumberland's JT Oldknow.

Fellow senior Drake De La Cruz was also perfect on Saturday, moving to 8-3 overall this season. De La Cruz grappled at 174 lbs. defeating Cumberland's Rocco Horvath with a 13-6 decision.

Freshman Kirk Smitherman was 1-1, earning a 12-10 decision at 125 lbs. over Midway's Tyrique Simms.

Zach Mullins, a freshman, was also 1-1 on the day, posting a victory over Questapha Lewis of Midway with a Fall at 6:28.

At 184 lbs., freshman Maxwell Underwood took down Randall West of Pikeville with a Fall at 6:57.

The Gold and Blue will next travel to Montreat, North Carolina to face Montreat College and Truett McConnell University Saturday, December 10.
