BECKLEY, West Virginia -- Campbellsville University was the challenger in Thursday's match as the Golden Bears began play in the NACE Starleague Varsity Premiere Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (4v4) Fall tournament. WVU Tech defeated the Tigers 2-0.
Tech's squad was made up of seniors
Konnor "SIMPLE3" Pack,
Hayden "INC." Mathers and
Christopher "CYVET" Grassi and sophomore
Elijah "GOEMON" Brown.
Mathers', who competed first, character of choice was
Lucas. Lucas hails from the video game series EarthBound. Grassi was up next and played with the character
Byleth who appears in Fire Emblem: Three Series. In the third spot for the Gold and Blue was Pack who picked
Pokémon Trainer from the Pokémon series as his first character. In his second round, Pack went with
Diddy Kong of Donkey Kong. The final Golden Bear to compete in the first round was Brown who chose
Donkey Kong to compete with. Each Golden Bear competed twice during the match Thursday evening.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is a fighting game series which features a host of different characters from various Nintendo games. In tournament play, each team has a four player lineup and each player is equipped with three stocks that the challenger attempts to diminish. Competition begins with the first player in each lineup going head-to-head, when a player in a team's lineup is wiped out, the next player steps into the arena. Whichever team wipes out all four of the opposing players wins the match.
The team will compete again next Thursday when they face Brewton-Parker College at 7 p.m. in the WVU Tech esports lab.
