Golden Bears finish eighth at AAC Wrestling Championship

MARIETTA, Georgia -- WVU Tech wrestling finished eighth overall at the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) Championship hosted by Life University Saturday.

Isaiha Casto led the way for the Gold and Blue with a third place finish at 184 lbs. Casto finished 3-1 on the day including a fall (3:58) over Miloz Gargol (Montreat) and a 7-2 decision W in the third place bout against Sam Irwin (Reinhardt). With the third place showing, Casto has qualified for the NAIA National Championship scheduled for March 3-4 in Wichita, Kansas.

At 157 lbs., John Grundmeyer finished 2-2 Saturday. Grundmeyer scored a tech fall over Anthony Greear (Truett-McConnell) 18-0 and a fall (1:17) over Keyshaun Taylor (Brewton-Parker).

Zach Mullins earned four team points after grappling to a win over Israel Shultz (St. Andrews) with a fall (3:15).

Wrestling at 133 lbs., Kirk Smitherman recorded a fall (2:49) over Michael Wilkinson (Bluefield).

Cameron Griffin also earned a W, defeating teammate Shannon Fray at 165 lbs. with a fall (2:44).

Drake De La Cruz wrestled at 174 lbs. and picked up a victory against fellow Golden Bear Ryan Turney with a fall (2:55).

At 285 lbs., Jeffrey Bowles earned a fall (5:00) against Tevin-Tecumsuh Person (Brewton-Parker).
