Beckley, W.Va. - The WVU Tech Rainbow Six Siege team overcome an early deficit to defeat the first-place NC State Wolfpack Wednesday night in the Golden Bears esports lab.
     Tech operators SithLordSam (Sam Miller, Sr.), TheAbaW (Tamer Abdelgelil, Sr.), AMGscythe (Andrew Gwinn, Fr.), Hilbert (Patrick Hilbert, Soph.) and bizzy.biyombo (Noah Tucker, Soph.) were entering the final week of the Fall regular season in the National Esports Collegiate Conference (NECC), and the stakes were massive. The Golden Bears had battled back to 2-2 after starting the season 0-2, NC State came into the week leading the Division IV, East A standings at 3-1. A win for the Golden Bears would likely qualify them for NECC conference playoffs, a loss would've potentially left them out of the top four (six-team division) and searching for answers.
     WVU Tech would would find themselves down 1-0 (best-of-three game series) after falling 7-4 on the map Chalet. The Wolfpack opened with successful offensive pushes in four out of the first six rounds, then held off a Golden Bear push-back on defense to secure the game, looking very much like a first-place opponent. Tech operator TheAbaW had the team's top statline, with a score of 3,625, 10 kills, 10 deaths and three assists.
     The Golden Bears would take a five minute timeout and adjust strategies before game two on the map Club House. WVU Tech found success on offense, going 4-2 through the first six rounds. They added to their lead, going up 6-2 with defensive stands in rounds seven and eight. NC State would win the next two but fell short, tying the game at 1-1 with a 7-4 WVU Tech win. Golden Bears operator AMGscythe led in score with a line of 5,750/8/8/4.
     Tech carried the momentum into the deciding game three on the map Border. Starting out on defense, the Golden Bears again went 4-2 in their opening series, then went up 5-2 with a win in round seven, before NC State began to rally. The Wolfpack stopped Tech in rounds eight and nine, looking like they might bring the match back before captain SithLordSam sealed victory with a clutch kill in round 10, capping off a quality, comeback win again the division leaders. AMGscythe again led the way for the Golden Bears overall, with a stat line of 6,145/9/9/5.
     The team's third straight win ends WVU Tech's fall regular season with a 3-2 record and sets up a four-way tie with Marietta College (3-2), NC State (3-2) and St. Bonaventure (3-2) for positions 1-4 in the division. All four teams will qualify for next week's conference playoffs, with first-round matchups TBA.
