Golden Bears hold tough at Music City Collegiate

Golf

DICKSON, Tenn. — WVU Tech golf battled through a deep national field to earn a share of 13th place at the Music City Collegiate, hosted at Greystone Golf Club. The Golden Bears carded rounds of 294 and 290 for a two-day total of 584 (+8), holding steady against 18 other teams that included multiple top-25 NAIA programs.

Due to weather, the tournament was shortened to 36 holes as the second round wrapped up early Tuesday morning.

Freshman Heidar Bjarnason (Selfoss, Iceland) once again paced WVU Tech, firing back-to-back rounds of 71 to finish tied for 21st at 142 (–2). He totaled eight birdies across his two rounds and has now posted three straight under-par tournaments.

Sophomore Alvaro Iglesias Pascual (Castellon, Spain) followed close behind, tying for 24th at 143 (–1) after carding a 69 in round two. Iglesias has recorded three top-10s and two rounds in the 60s this fall.

Rounding out Tech's scoring were Mathias Maldonado (Bolivia), T61 at 149 (+5); Roberto Peiró Llobell (Gandia, Spain), T67 at 150 (+6); and Sean Cooper (Jumping Branch, W.Va.), T91 at 157 (+13).

The team combined for 26 birdies — their second-highest total of the season — led by Bjarnason's eight and Iglesias' six.
