Golden Bears open season with PRs and strong efforts

Women's and Men's Cross Country

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- WVU Tech cross country kicked off its 2025 season with determination and growth during the Thundering Herd Invitational. The Golden Bears posted personal records and gained valuable early-season experience from both returning runners and newcomers.

Men's 5K

Evan McElwayne led Tech with a 17:04.89 PR, finishing 34th overall.
Freshman Jan Fasius Ponsa posted a 17:33.68 debut, showing strong promise.
Senior Christian Saffouri crossed in 18:01.05, bringing veteran consistency.
Tech packed tightly with solid runs from Eli Jordan (18:17.43), Travis Anderson (19:00.38) and Cade Curfman (19:28.05).
Seniors Samuel Whitcomb (19:39.94) and freshman Chucky Jordan (20:41.53) rounded out the lineup.

Women's 5K

Sophomore Lexie Wikel clocked a 22:50.67 PR, leading the way for the Golden Bears.
Fellow sophomore Peyton Asbury turned in a steady effort with a 26:19.15 finish.

The teams will be back in action Friday, September 19 when they travel for the Patty Forgey Invitational in Rio Grande, Ohio.
