WVU Tech golf, Iglesias Pascual shine at Roger Merb Invite

McDERMOTT, Ohio — WVU Tech golf turned in a championship performance at the Roger Merb Invitational hosted by Shawnee State University, winning the team title with a two-round total of 583 (+7). The Golden Bears edged Georgetown College (584) by one stroke in a field of 19 teams.

Sophomore Alvaro Iglesias Pascual delivered the highlight of the tournament, tying for first with a 36-hole score of 139 (68-71, –5). He clinched the individual title in a one-hole playoff to earn medalist honors and a spot on the All-Tournament team.

Freshman Roberto Peiró Llobell added a top-10 finish, tying for ninth overall with a 146 (69-77, +2). Freshman Heidar Bjarnason tied for 17th at 150, sophomore Alejandro Gutierrez tied for 23rd at 151, and freshman Parker Vannoy carded a 158 to round out the A team.

WVU Tech also fielded three additional squads, with the B team placing 11th (627), the C team 17th (674), and the D team 18th (684).

Golden Bear Highlights (Roger Merb Invitational)

WVU Tech "A" Team — 1st place (+7 | 284–299 = 583)

  • Alvaro Iglesias Pascual: 68–71 (139), T1 — Captured medalist honors in a playoff after tying for first; named to the All-Tournament Team.
  • Roberto Peiró Llobell: 69–77 (146), T9 — Opened with a 69 to sit near the top before closing with steady play.
  • Heidar Bjarnason: 74–76 (150), T17 — Provided two consistent rounds to anchor Tech's depth.
  • Alejandro Gutierrez: 73–78 (151), T23 — Added valuable mid-lineup scoring across both rounds.
  • Parker Vannoy: 83–75 (158), T47 — Rebounded with a strong second round to help secure the title.

WVU Tech "B" Team — 11th place (+51 | 319–308 = 627)

  • Lee Kimathi: 77–71 (148), T13 — Led the "B" squad with a stellar second-round 71.
  • Mathias Maldonado: 76–75 (151), T23 — Steady scoring across both days kept him in the top 25.
  • Gage Garvin: 82–83 (165), T68 — Battled tough conditions to finish inside the top 70.
  • Max Juutinen: 87–79 (166), T72 — Improved his score by eight strokes in round two.
  • Valentin Jimenez Nuñez: 84–88 (172), T82 — Rounded out the team effort with solid experience.

WVU Tech "C" Team — 17th place (+98 | 323–351 = 674)

  • Juan Setuain Irujo: 74–75 (149), T14 — Paved the way for the "C" squad with a top-15 finish.
  • Trevor Boothe: 76–86 (162), T61 — Strong in round one, gaining experience in his first fall season.
  • Gavin Gregory: 77–88 (165), T68 — Three shots back of Boothe; delivered two counting rounds for the squad.
  • Peyton DeHaven: 96–102 (198), 94th — Gained valuable reps in tournament play.

WVU Tech "D" Team — 18th place (+108 | 338–346 = 684)

  • Pablo Antolín: 77–77 (154), T34 — Impressive consistency with matching rounds of 77.
  • Ian Crouse: 86–84 (170), T79 — Found better rhythm in round two to improve.
  • Hunter Moore: 86–94 (180), T88 — Earned competitive experience on a tough track.
  • Martin Furmento: 89–91 (180), T88 — Matched Moore's total for shared team standing.
