Golden Bears score, advance on championship Friday

MARIETTA, Ohio — WVU Tech opened competition Friday at the River States Conference (RSC) Indoor Championship inside the Dyson Baudo Recreation Center, highlighted by a scoring performance in the men's distance medley relay and multiple finals qualifications on the track.

After one day of competition, the Golden Bear men sit eighth with 7.5 points, while the women are 10th with two points in the team standings.


Men's Highlights

The WVU Tech men scored three points in the 4,000-meter distance medley relay as Christian Saffouri, Isaac Agee, Chucky Jordan and Jan Fasius Ponsa combined to place sixth in 11:36.59.

Freshman Agee added a strong all-around day. He tied for fourth in the long jump with a leap of 6.68 meters (21-11) to score 4.5 points and advanced to the finals in the 55-meter hurdles after running 7.59 seconds in the prelims. Agee also competed in the 55-meter and 200-meter dash preliminaries.

In the 55-meter hurdles prelims, Ralph Aaron Etaba Ateba advanced to the finals with an 8.19 showing, while John Ashton also competed.

On the track, WVU Tech's 4x800-meter relay of Etaba Ateba, Saffouri, Samuel Whitcomb and Travis Anderson clocked 8:54.13.

In the 5,000 meters, Evan McElwayne battled to a 16:18.46 finish before being disqualified for a lane violation.

In the field, Crutcher Hutchison competed in the long jump, while Matthew Rhodes, Brady Smith, Colton Henderson and Jonathan Cantley represented Tech in the weight throw.

Women's Highlights

Freshman Rebecca H. Lorincz scored the Golden Bears' first team points of the meet, placing seventh in the 600 meters in 1:45.05 to earn two points.

Lorincz also competed in the 200-meter dash prelims.

In the distance events, Lexie Wikel completed the 5,000 meters in 20:36.66.

Freshman Hailey Ervin advanced to the finals of the 55-meter hurdles with a 9.36 preliminary effort and also competed in the 55 and 200-meter dashes.

Jadyn Farmer and Nevaeh Wooding ran in the 55 and 200-meter dash prelims.

In the field events, Ervin competed in the long jump, while Abigail Holley represented WVU Tech in the weight throw.
