PRESTONSBURG, Ky. — Senior Pelayo Castillo led WVU Tech with a top-20 finish as the Golden Bears opened their 2026-27 season Monday and Tuesday at the Orange and Black Collegiate at Stonecrest Golf Course.
WVU Tech finished 11th in the 13-team field with a three-round total of 916, shooting 307 in the opening round, 303 in the second and 306 in Tuesday's final round. The Golden Bears finished the tournament at 52-over.
Castillo paced the Golden Bears, finishing tied for 17th at 2-over 218. After an opening-round 76, Castillo fired a 3-under 69 in the second round, the lowest round by a WVU Tech golfer during the tournament. He closed with a 1-over 73.
Sophomore Parker Vannoy finished tied for 39th at 12-over 228, turning in rounds of 75, 77 and 76. Freshman Javier Redondo Sanchez followed at 19-over 235, tying for 53rd after rounds of 80, 77 and 78. Daniel Aguado finished tied for 58th at 23-over 239 with rounds of 76, 84 and 79, while Max Juutinen finished 67th at 33-over 249 with rounds of 82, 80 and 87.
WVU Tech also had two freshmen competing as individuals. Danny Lin finished tied for 34th at 11-over 227 and opened the tournament with a 1-under 71 before rounds of 75 and 81. Guillermo Quintana tied for 48th at 17-over 233, improving after an opening 80 with rounds of 76 and 77. Lin and Quintana competed individually, so their scores did not count toward WVU Tech's team total.
