BECKLEY, W.Va. — WVU Tech Athletics has announced its Golden Bear Athletes of the Week for Sept. 1-6, recognizing junior Julia Silva of women's soccer and freshman Joost Hermeling of men's soccer for standout performances during the week.
Julia Silva (Halton Hills, Ontario, Canada) | Women's Soccer
Silva totaled two goals and one assist for five points across WVU Tech's three matches during the week. She contributed an assist in the Golden Bears' 4-3 comeback victory at Milligan before scoring both Tech goals against Southeastern.
Against Southeastern, Silva scored twice in a span of 2:40 late in the second half, turning a 3-0 deficit into a 3-2 game. She finished the week with eight shots, including three on goal, while logging 201 minutes across the three contests.
Silva is a junior central attacking midfielder/striker majoring in biology.
Joost Hermeling (Rastede, Germany) | Men's Soccer
Hermeling accounted for all of WVU Tech's scoring in a 2-2 road draw at Tennessee Wesleyan, finding the net twice in the Golden Bears' only match of the week. The freshman finished with two goals on two shots, putting both attempts on target for a four-point performance.
The brace helped WVU Tech remain unbeaten through its first three matches of the season. Hermeling's two goals also marked his first multi-goal performance in a Golden Bear uniform.
Hermeling is a freshman forward majoring in psychology.
