Garrett Goosman is entering his first official year as Assistant Athletic Director and his twelfth season as head coach of the WVU Tech men’s golf program. Goosman, a longtime contributor to Golden Bear athletics, has been with the university since 2012 and most recently served as Assistant Athletic Director for Game Day Operations.
In his administrative role, Goosman supports Athletic Director Kenny Howell in overseeing the day-to-day operations of the athletic department as Assistant Athletic Director. His responsibilities include managing student-athlete compliance, NAIA eligibility, athletic scholarships, team travel, budgets, fundraising, and overall game day logistics.
Under Goosman’s leadership, the Golden Bear golf program has seen steady growth and success since joining the River States Conference (RSC) in 2015. Notable accomplishments include:
- 2023-24 Season: One of the most successful years in program history, with a 2nd-place finish in the RSC Spring Championship and 3rd in the Fall Preview. The team placed in the top three in 7 of 11 tournaments.
- Individual Honors: Bryson Beaver was named RSC Golfer of the Year, Championship Medalist, First Team All-Conference, and advanced to the NAIA National Championship. Lukas Lange and Iglesias Pascual also earned All-Conference honors. All-Americans, RSC weekly award winners, Golden Bear Athletes of the Week and standout performers including 2024 RSC Golfer and Player of the Year Bryson Beaver and RSC Newcomer of the Year Matt Ryan (2016).
- 2024-25 Season Highlights: A tournament win at the Ohio Christian University Invite (565 total score), 1st place at the Harry Weinbrecht Invitational, and multiple podium finishes, including a narrow 2nd at the RSC Spring Championship (two strokes behind Midway University).
- Past Team Highlights: Multiple top-three finishes at conference championships, including a 2nd-place finish at the 2016 RSC Fall Preview (lost in a playoff), 3rd place in 2018, and 2nd place again in 2024 after another playoff battle.
Goosman has led the Golden Bears to victories at several tournaments over the years, including at Shawnee State (2017), Bluefield State (2017), Kentucky Christian (2018), Bob Jones University (2019), and Ohio Christian University (2023). Tech also secured two top-10 finishes at the USCAA National Tournament prior to joining the RSC and won the Golden Bear Classic in 2018 and 2022.
Off the course, Goosman has guided the program to multiple NAIA Scholar Team honors and has consistently maintained a team GPA above 3.00, often among the highest of Tech’s 17 varsity sports. The team has produced numerous All-Academic selections. The golf team is also very involved in the community of Beckley and have helped out at several community service events.
Goosman was named Thomas Harkleroad -River States Conference Coach of the Year in both 2018 and 2024. He currently acts as the Men’s Rater and Sports Chair for the conference.
In addition to his coaching and administrative duties, Goosman is an active contributor to campus and community life. He serves as an advisor for the Christian Student Union, is a member of the Golden Bear Alumni Association (TGBAA), and volunteers regularly, including at the West Virginia Special Olympics, The Greenbrier Classic, and NCAA Division II National Championship. In 2019, he and the golf team were recognized with the Outstanding Service Award by the Student Government Association, and he received the Outstanding Golden Bear Award for his service contributions. Goosman serves as an active church member at the Southeast Church of the Nazarene in Charleston, WV.
A native of Gauley Bridge, West Virginia, Goosman is a proud WVU Tech alumnus. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Athletic Coaching Education (Physical Education) with a minor in Psychology in 2011. He is also a member of the United States Golf Association (USGA). His parents Chuck (Tech Hall of Fame Quarterback, 1962) and Sherry still reside in Gauley Bridge.
He currently resides in Nitro, West Virginia with his wife Ashley (WVU Tech Class of 2013) and their dog, Rory.
