Junior John Walters has been named the Golden Bear Star Performer for January 30 through February 5.
 
Walters captured the 2013 Builder Invitational championship in the 149 lb. class last Saturday at The Apprentice School in Newport News, Virginia.  The grappler went a perfect 4-0 on the day.  In his first match, Walters scored a technical fall at 7:00 over University of Scranton’s Ryan Giovanetti en route to a 17-2 victory.  During the second bout, the champion received a 14-2 major decision victory over SAU’s Nick Sauceda.  In the semi-finals, Walters overpowered Ferrum College’s Jamie Carr in a 3-0 decision before defeating Carr’s teammate Paul Biggs 4-0 in the championship match.  
 
Earlier in the season, Walters qualified for the NAIA National Tournament in Des Moines, Iowa and will compete in the 149 lb. division.
 
Walters is an athletic coaching education major from Camden, Delaware.
