Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Becky Brouse

Men's Soccer Earns Fifth Consecutive Win

BECKLEY, West Virginia - There are many records that men's soccer head coach Luis Cortell has amassed since he arrived at WVU Tech, a national championship, the most wins in a single season and career, plus players under him currently top every record at Tech.

However, there is one record that he will be most proud of; Saturday Cortell started 11 Academic All-Americans, a feat managed by the student-athletes due to their hard work on and off the pitch. Coach Cortell will leave a legacy of championships and wins when he leaves, but he will always be remembered for the way his team performed in the classroom.

Tech took their fifth consecutive win at the Paul Cline Memorial Complex in Beckley, West Virginia with at 15-1 score over Virginia Western Community College. The Golden Bears move to 10-1-1 on the season, scoring a total of 73 goals compared to their opponent's eight in 2014.

The team saw goal contributions from eight different Golden Bears, with three players leading the way with hat tricks; senior Juan Suarez, junior Sam Laughton and sophomore Ridge Ramsey. Sophomore Prince Idornigie netted two goals while sophomores Ryan Baker and Drew Lytton and juniors Craig Mitchell and Felipe Sozinho had one a piece.

All 15 goals came off the assistance of teammates, Laughton had a game-high five assists, sophomore Adric Armstrong-Smith dished four, senior Zach Carnahan finished with two and freshman Tyler Cox, Suarez, Ramsey and Mitchell marked one each.

In goal, sophomore Renato Gomes earned the win with just one goal allowed, off a Rapids penalty kick, and two saves in 80 minutes of play. Gomes moves to 2-0 this season after 236:34 minutes defending the net.

Friday, WVU Tech was voted second in the United States Athletic Association (USCAA) Coaches Poll, moving up a spot since last week with 291 votes. Tech only trails to the University of Maine at Fort Kent (300) while topping Bryant & Stratton-Syracuse by one vote.

The Golden Bears will head to Elkins, West Virginia Tuesday, Oct. 14 to go head-to-head with Davis & Elkins College. Kickoff is set for 12:00 p.m.

WVU Tech is also set to host the 2014 USCAA National Championships again this year in Charleston, West Virginia. The tournament is scheduled for Nov. 5-8, more details can be found at goldenbearathletics.com
