SALEM, Virginia - The WVU Tech volleyball team split a pair of matches in Salem, Virginia Saturday. The Golden Bears took down Virginia Union University, 3-2, however Tech fell to host school Salem International University, 3-2.
The Golden Bears moved to 5-16 in 2014 after set scores of 25-19, 20-25, 25-16, 15-25 and 17-15 in match one and 25-23, 15-25, 18-25, 25-16 and 9-15 vs. the Tigers.
Winning the first match marked Tech's third consecutive win, the most for a squad since 2011. Sophomore
Brianna Bench recorded a new career-high with a team-high 13 kills against Virginia Union while classmate
Keyonna Morrow put down a team-high 13 kills against Salem International.
In the Virginia Union match-up, senior
Haley Pauley recorded 12 kills, five digs and an ace. Bench also produced two aces and blocks. Junior
Jacque Carroll had a triple double with 19 assists, 12 digs and 10 kills, she also blocked two balls.
Redshirt freshman
Michala Dean had 20 assists in match one also grabbing a double double with 10 digs and handled 15 balls for assists in the nightcap. On defense,
Chelsea Dean led the Golden Bears against Virginia Union with 21 digs while marking nine against Salem.
On offense in the final match of the day, Pauley finished with eight kills while sophomore
Hannah Atkins notched six with a block.
The Golden Bears will return to the court when they host Kentucky Christian University for a doubleheader Oct. 10. The first serve is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
