MONTGOMERY, West Virginia - Four Golden Bears scored in double figures and the WVU Tech men's basketball team led No. 14 (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics-NAIA DI) Georgetown College (Kentucky) with 1:48 left to play Tuesday at the Baisi Athletic Center, but were unable to complete the upset as the Tigers pulled away for a 74-71 win.
Tech falls to 16-6 with the loss while Georgetown improves to 17-4.
Senior
Sharife Sergeant led the team with an 8-for-15 shooting performance from the field, including a 3-for-5 effort from the free throw line for 19 points. Sergeant supplemented his scoring with a game-high 14 rebounds for the double-double and two blocks.
Senior
Leon Cooper, Jr. posted 15 points and a game-high six assists. Seniors
Jaren Marino and
Jauries Thomas chipped in 14 and 13 points apiece. Marino was 7-for-9 from the foul line. Thomas also recorded a double-double with 11 rebounds, six offensive.
Sophomore
Ra'Shaud Kincaid dished five assists and tallied three points, two boards and a steal.
The Gold and Blue held the edge on rebounds (45-38), points off turnovers (14-12) and points in the paint (34-30) while their opponent just out shot Tech, 26-for-64 (40.6 percent) compared to 25-for-63 (39.7 percent). The teams both went 15-for-20 from the foul line, shooting 75.0 percent.
The Golden Bears will return to action when they travel to Huntington, West Virginia to take on the University of Rio Grande (Ohio) in the Big Sandy Superstore Arena. Action is set to begin at 7:00 p.m.
