MYRTLE BEACH, South Carolina - WVU Tech baseball went 1-1 in a series against the University of Pikeville in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina Saturday afternoon. The Golden Bears (1-4) grabbed their first victory of their 2015 campaign off the shutout effort of sophomore pitcher
Austin Southcott, 2-0 while falling in the night cap to UPIKE (3-2), 10-9 in extra innings (nine).
GAME 1 - WVU TECH 2, UPIKE 0 (Box Score)Southcott kept Pikeville off the scoreboard for all seven innings he was on the mound, pitching the first Golden Bear of the season, allowing no opposing players to cross the plate on three hits while recording eight strikeouts.
The lead stayed with the Golden Bears after the first inning, where they scored one run on an error when junior
Hugo Rodriguez crossed the plate. Rodriguez made it on base off a triple. Sophomore
Trevor Lam nailed a home run in the top of the third for Tech's insurance run and the final 2-0 score.
GAME 2 - WVU TECH 9, UPIKE 10 - EXTRA INNINGS (Box Score)Twenty hits weren't enough for the Golden Bears as it lost a shootout, 10-9, to Pikeville for the final game of the series. Game three was cancelled on Sunday due to inclement weather.
Senior Josh Smetana ended up on the wrong side of the pitching decision, charged with the loss in 2.2 innings of work. Smetana walked one while striking out four and allowing one run.
The Golden Bears answered Pikeville's top inning with three runs of their own in the first, scoring on an RBI single by junior Xavier Barriere and a two-run double by Lam.
Pikeville stayed on top until the final out after taking the lead in the ninth, scoring one run on a sacrifice fly.
Weather pending, Tech has a double header scheduled Tuesday against the University of Rio Grande. The first pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
