Tech Set to Face #1 Hope International in NAIA Tournament

KANSAS CITY, Missouri - The WVU Tech men's basketball program will play its fourth all-time national tournament game when the ball tips off at 6:15 p.m. on Wednesday from the Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Missouri. The matchup consists of first-seeded Hope International University and a Golden Bear team that hasn't seen National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Division I Men's Basketball National tournament action since 1988.

Tech is 0-3 all-time in the NAIA National Tournament with appearances in 1957 (Neal Baisi, Coach), 1982 (Tom Sutherland, Coach) and 1988 (Tom Sutherland, Coach). Former NBA player, Sedale Threatt, the Golden Bears' all-time leading scorer, played for Tech in '82.

The Golden Bears are allowing 70.3 points per game and as a team, average 82.7 points per game while holding a 67.5 percent free throw percentage.

Senior Jauries Thomas averages 14.87 points per game to lead Tech while senior Matt Green produces 17.19 points per game to lead Hope International.

This will be the third consecutive trip to Kansas City for the Royals who advanced to the Sweet 16 the past two seasons. Hope is 29-2 and this past Wednesday became the new No. 1 in the NAIA DI coaches poll for the first time.

The Royals are ranked third in the Nation by giving up just 59 points per game. As a team, they average 76.4 points per game and hold a 64 percent free throw percentage.

Senior Sharife Sergeant has been selected to play in the NAIA All-Star Game, to be held March 21 in Kansas City.
