Tech Wins Fourth Straight, Defeats West Virginia Wesleyan

Women's Basketball

BUCKHANNON, West Virginia — The WVU Tech women's basketball team ran its winning streak to four games as they captured a come-from-behind 67-64 victory over NCAA DII foe West Virginia Welseyan College in non-conference play Wednesday evening. The Golden Bears now hold a winning record of 4-3 while the Bobcats move to 0-1 this season.

Tech trailed most of the game until there was 1:49 left to play and a jumper from Requena gave them a one-point lead. With 39 seconds left to play, the Bobcats tied it up but that was as much as Tech's defense would allow and the Golden Bears went on to win it on a 5-3 run.

WVU Tech was led by sophomore Zjhane West who finished with 14 points. West also pulled down three rebounds to go with three steals and two assists.

Coming off the bench for the Gold and Blue, sophomore Alexandra Combs and freshman Laura Requena posted 11 and ten points respectively to round out Tech's top offensive contributors. Combs went a perfect 6-for-6 from the bonus line to go with six rebounds, three assists, a block and a steal. Requena was 4-for-4 from the field and one rebound shy of a double-double with a game-high nine boards.

Senior Brooke Gee produced nine points, five rebounds, two blocks and a steal in the victory while sophomore Savannah Shamblin led the team with four steals to go with two points and two rebounds. In just ten minutes of play, senior Keymonisha Dudley produces seven points and two steals.

Tech held the Bobcats to 35.5 percent (22-for-62) shooting from the field while shooting 41.0 percent (25-for-61) themselves. The Golden Bears held advantages in second chance points (9-6), bench points (35-21) and points in the paint (22-16).

The Gold and Blue will look to keep their streak alive when they head to Wilberforce University tomorrow, Thursday for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff in Ohio.
