DELRAY BEACH, Florida — WVU Tech concluded a historic 2016 season in overtime Wednesday afternoon as they fell to No. 1 seed Hastings College 2-1 in a quarterfinal of the NAIA Men's Soccer National Championship. The Golden Bears finish their campaign 18-3-2 while the Broncos will move on to the semifinals with a record of 22-0-1.
After an at-large bid and entering the championship as the No. 8 seed, Tech made program history by defeating Olivet Nazarene University, 2-1 (November 19) in Beckley, West Virginia to advance to the final site in Delray Beach, Florida. The Gold and Blue continued that historical momentum as they defeated No. 9 MidAmerica Nazarene 2-1 on November 28 in the second round.
Junior
Francisco Neto fired a shot from 25 feet to the far post that made its way past Hastings goalkeeper Joe White and gave the Golden Bears a 1-0 lead in minute 31. Tech held onto that lead until the Broncos found their equalizer off a penalty kick made by their leading scorer, Daniel White, in the 50
th minute.
Hastings managed seven more shots and Tech three in regulation but the fans at the Seacrest Soccer Complex were awarded bonus soccer as the game was forced to overtime. With a little less than four minutes left in the first overtime, the Broncos' Adam Knight scored the golden goal to give Hastings the 2-1 victory.
Tech finished with four shots on goal compared to their opponent's five shots on goal. Hastings also held the advantage in corner kicks, 9-2.
Senior goalkeeper
Hunter Moles finished his career with 170 saves and a save percentage of 0.829. This season was a career-best with 72 saves including three in Tech's final contest of 2016.
The team finished the season with five top-ten rankings in NAIA DI play including No. 1 in total assists (67), No. 2 in assists per game (3.050), No. 6 in total goals (76), No. 6 in total shutouts (12) and No. 10 in shutouts per game (0.550).
