WVU Tech Softball Splits KIAC Doubleheader at Asbury

WILMORE, Kentucky — WVU Tech softball began their Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (KIAC) play by splitting a doubleheader with Asbury University Friday afternoon. The Golden Bears (7-9, 1-1 KIAC) fell after eight innings in game one 3-2 before taking the Eagles (7-12, 1-1) in the night cap 7-1.

Sophomore MaKayla Waugh, who has a batting average of .379 and slugging percentage of .448, finished the day 4-for-6 at the plate with three runs scored, a double and a RBI.

It was only after eight innings of play the Eagles were able to come out on top 3-2 in game one. The Eagles finished with ten hits and three RBI compared to Tech's eight hits and one RBI.

Freshman Skylar Connelly, senior Megan Blythe and Waugh each tallied two hits. Blythe and Waugh were the two Golden Bears who crossed the plate for Tech's scores.

Freshman Rachel Rusch marked the team's lone RBI, driving in Waugh in the top of the fifth off a single up the middle.

Junior Mackenzie Wilson (2-4) put in 6.1 innings of work for the loss. Wilson struck out nine batters while scattering eight hits and two earned runs.

Of the 12 hits produced by the Golden Bears, Waugh, sophomore MiKayla Craze and senior Breigh Renner finished with two hits each. Connelly had a standout game, finishing with two RBI, a double, a run scored and a stolen base. The short stop also reached base twice by walking.

Waugh and sophomore Kayla Jones had doubles in the night cap while the two and Blythe drove in one run each. Blythe and Waugh also grabbed a stolen base each.

Freshman Hannah Burke (4-3) pitched a complete game for her fourth collegiate victory. The Warren, Ohio native gave up eight hits and one earned run while striking out one opponent.

The Gold and Blue are now set to travel to Clermont, Florida to participate in the PFX Games. Tech will play in ten contests March 20-25 and are set to face Mount Mercy University, Tufts University, University of Northwestern Ohio, Southeastern University and Middlebury College.
