Tech Takes Two vs. OCU, Runs Winning Streak to Seven

EAST BANK, West Virginia — The WVU Tech baseball team ran its winning streak to seven games with a doubleheader sweep of KIAC foe Ohio Christian University Saturday afternoon at Douglas M. Epling Field in East Bank, West Virginia. The Golden Bears boast an 8-2, 2-0 (KIAC) record while the Trailblazers are now 1-7, 0-2 (KIAC).

Junior Austin Southcott (2-0) tossed a complete-game shutout victory in a 13-0 win in game one while senior Josh Hudson (2-1) did 4.0 innings of work in game two for the W as Tech defeated Ohio Christian 21-0 after five innings.

At the plate, junior Tanner Levine had a standout day as he finished 5-for-6 with a triple, a double, three runs scored and two RBI. Senior Tommy Weaver dominated in game two, knocking a three-run home run and a double while marking six RBI and four runs scored.

Tech had 20 hits from 11 different Golden Bears while junior Sebastian Gomez Herrera and freshman Roy Suzuki each hit a home run. Herrera's long ball drove in three runs for the Gold and Blue.

Senior Dylan Harvey (3-for-5, RBI, SB), Levine (2-for-3, 3B, 2 runs), senior Jeinson Espinosa (2-for-4, 2B, RBI, 2 runs), Herrera (3-for-4, HR, 5 RBI, 1 run), junior Victor Diaz (2-for-4, RBI, 1 run) and Suzuki (3-for-4, HR, 3 RBI, 1 run) were the Golden Bears who finished with a multi-hit game.

Southcott allowed just two hits while striking out six Trailblazers en route to his second shutout and complete game this season.

Hudson was excellent in his third start this year, limiting Ohio Christian to four hits while striking out two batters. Sophomore Nick Brumfield tossed one inning scattering two strikeouts and one hit.

Weaver was 3-for-3 at the plate while Levine also finished a perfect 3-for-3, each marking a double. Espinosa and junior Brady Groesbeck finished a two-base knock each. In Groesbeck's effort, he marked three RBI.

On the bases, Weaver and Suzuki managed a stolen base each.

The team will look to take the series sweep over Ohio Christian as they travel to Portsmouth, Ohio on Monday for doubleheader conference action. The first pitch is scheduled for noon.
