Tech Wins in Eight in Game One, Falls in Game Two

SMITHERS, West Virginia — The WVU Tech softball team split a two-game set with King University in non-conference action Tuesday afternoon at the Terry E. Willis Field. The Golden Bears took the first one 5-4 after eight innings before falling 13-0 (five innings) to the Tornado in the final game of the series. Tech is now 13-20 while King holds a record of 11-23.

Senior Genna Trippett hit her ninth home run of the season in the win and sophomore MaKayla Waugh marked a double as both drove in two runs each to help lead the Gold and Blue to an extra inning victory. In the circle, freshman Kaitlyn Sisler (1-0) marked her first collegiate win after one inning of work.

Trippett and sophomore Kayla Harbin and MaKayla Craze finished with two hits each in the win. Waugh and Trippett were joined by senior Megan Blythe who drove in one run while they had two RBI each.

Freshman Hannah Burke drew the start pitching for the Golden Bears, scattering six hits and four earned runs while striking out one batter after 5.0 innings in the circle.

Freshmen Skylar Connelly and Rachel Rusch, Blythe and senior Stephanie Seewer had one hit each to combine for Tech's total of four in the night cap.

The team saw pitches from starter junior Mackenzie Wilson (5-7), Sisler, sophomore Kyla Shull and freshman Becky Rusch. Wilson was dealt the loss after 3.1 innings, seven hits, two earned runs and two strike outs.

The team will next host West Liberty University Thursday in Smithers, West Virginia. The first pitch of the doublheader is scheduled for 2 p.m.
