KINGSPORT, Tennessee — WVU Tech baseball finished their 2016 campaign with a historical 40 wins after defeating Brescia University 17-3 Friday afternoon before falling to Indiana University Southeast in an elimination game, 7-3. The Golden Bears finish 40-16 overall after going 2-2 during the KIAC Tournament.

Jayson Sykora scattered 11 hits and improved to 7-1 by limiting Brescia to just three runs over nine innings of work. He struck out four and walked one.
In the night cap, Tech got on top quick in the bottom of the first with a 2-0 lead after a lead off home run from senior

Brady Groesbeck that led to him crossing the plate. Tech's final score of the season came in the eighth inning when senior
Tommy Weaver scored a run off a Grenadier error.

WVU Tech scored in six of its last seven innings with the last one being the biggest. The Golden Bears scored eight runs in the top of the ninth to put the game out of reach for good.Â
Harvey was 3-for-6 with three runs and freshman Roy Suzuki was 3-for-5 with three runs and two RBIs to lead the Gold and Blue offense.Â
Eight different Golden Bears had a hit and six of them registered multi-hit games including Harvey and Suzuki with three each and senior Doug Prather, sophomore Ian Southcott, junior Sebastian Gomez Herrera and freshman Anferny Ellis two each.
Brescia made seven errors in the game and had a total of four pitchers see the mound.Â

The team finished with nine hits including another standout showing at the plate from Harvey who finished with three hits, a RBI and a run scored.
Groesbeck also marked three hits while senior Josh Hudson and juniors Trevor Lam and Heath Utterback had one each.
The Golden Bears used four pitchers in nine innings with junior Chris Davidson (3-4-2) earning the start and the loss after six innings of work. Davidson gave up 12 hits and four earned runs while striking out two Grenadiers.
Seniors Brandon Tucker and Austin Southcott and junior Tanner Levine also saw action on the mound. Southcott retired two batters via strikes in 1.1 innings while Levine had one strike out in 1.2 innings.
The Grenadiers will continue on to the championship round tomorrow, Saturday and will face the University of Rio Grande beginning at 11 a.m. IU Southeast will have to win two to gain the title while the RedStorm just need one W tomorrow to be champions.
Tech's season was a historical one, establishing four new program records including receiving votes in the NAIA Baseball Coaches' Top 25 Poll (April 26). The 2016 squad also earned the most wins in the program (40 as of May 6), the most consecutive wins (15 established on March 11) and scored the most runs in a single game (23 vs. Cincinnati Christian, April 15).
