LAURINBURG, North Carolina -- WVU Tech wrestling split a triangular hosted by St. Andrews University, falling to University of the Cumberlands, 40-9, before defeating the Knights, 30-17. The Golden Bears are now 3-4 in duals this season.
Senior
Paul Gonzales defeated his first opponent of the night at 125 pounds, Austin Slates of Cumberlands, with a 6-4 SV decision to give Tech three team points. Freshman
Justice Horn picked up the remainder of Tech's points with a win by forfeit at 285.
Gonzales fell in his second bout before Tech and St. Andrews traded forfeit wins with senior
Denis Robles winning by forfeit at 133 pounds. Freshman
Leland Swafford followed that by pinning Noah Walker at 149 pounds (2:00). Swafford also defeated Walker on January 7 with a 17-2 technical fall.
Junior
Corey Palmer scored a 13-12 decision to upend his foe, Michael Nelson at 157 pounds to give Tech a 15-10 lead. Freshman
Louis Bernard won his match at 165 pounds with a fall at 5:40 over Zeke Lee.
Senior
Giovane Lins dropped a 15-4 major decision to Kavoris Perry at 174 pounds before freshman
Will Van Hoose (184 pounds) won a hard-fought bout 3-1 over Argie Burnette.
Senior Terry Nance II scored the final fall of the evening at 197 pounds over Tyler Evers (1:40). Junior Jason Wainwright then fell by a close decision of 3-1 at 285 pounds to end the match.
Tech will next play host to Ohio Valley University for a dual on Saturday scheduled for 6 p.m. in the Baisi Athletic Center.
