Women's Basketball

PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania -- WVU Tech women's basketball came away with a 61-60 win against Carlow University in the first River States Conference (RSC) game of the season on Wednesday at Oakland Catholic High School.

Carlow (1-3, 0-1 RSC) controlled the majority of the tight contest, but the Golden Bears (5-6, 1-0 RSC) took the lead, 56-53, with 3:57 remaining for the first time since early in the second quarter.

Tech held a 61-54 advantage with 1:29 to play. Carlow scrambled to come back, earning a chance to tie the game with 2.8 seconds remaining. Head coach Tim Moore called a timeout to set up a play for three points with his Celtics trailing, 61-58. However, the Gold and Blue defense swarmed the ball on the inbounds pass and Carlow settled for a two at the buzzer.

Junior Savannah Shamblin had 10 points and two steals to lead Tech while Katelyn Byrd had nine rebounds and Zjhane West had three assists.

WVU Tech dominated the Celtics on the glass, winning the rebounding battle, 46-32. The Golden Bears earned 27 offensive rebounds. Fifteen of those came in the first half, helping them overcome shooting only 20.6 percent (7-34) from the field.

The Golden Bears' shots started to fall in the second half, when they reached a 45.5 shooting percentage (15-33). They gradually cut into Carlow's lead, which was as high as nine points with 5:12 left in the third quarter. Tech outscored the Celtics, 22-13, in the fourth quarter.

The Gold and Blue will return to the court for another RSC contest in Pittsburgh this Saturday, December 2 when they travel to Point Park University.
