PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania -- Point Park University was unable to hit any key shots down the stretch and wound up losing a River States Conference (RSC) home game to WVU Tech, 85-79, on Saturday afternoon at the CCAC-Allegheny Physical Education Building.
The Pioneers (5-4, 0-2 RSC) were down nine points, 54-45, midway through the third quarter but battled back to make it basically a one-possession game for most of the fourth quarter. Baylie Mook nailed a 3-pointer to pull Point Park within 78-76 with 2:56 left in the game. But that was unfortunately the final made field goal by the Pioneers, who could not get the key shot to go down in the final minutes.Â
Savannah Shamblin, who led all scorers with 30 points for WVU Tech (6-6, 2-0 RSC), drilled her sixth and final 3-pointer of the game for a 75-67 lead with 5:37 left. That was the last made basket by the Golden Bears, and they held on. Their final 10 points all came from the free-throw line, where they were 10 for 14 down the stretch. Shamblin had a big fourth quarter with 12 points to secure the win.
Point Park had 41 points come from its bench led by 14 apiece from Mook and Nikki Corcoran. Corcoran hit a couple of 3-pointers in the first half to help the Pioneers take their largest lead of 39-33 with 2:14 left before the break. But WVU Tech stole away the halftime lead of 40-39 with the last seven points of the half.
Maryssa Agurs had 10 of her 12 bench points come in the second half and keyed a 9-0 run in the third quarter that drew the Pioneers even at 54-54. WVU Tech held a 59-56 lead entering the fourth.
The Golden Bears return home on Wednesday, December 6 when they host a non-conference game against University of the Cumberlands (7-1). Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in the Beckley Raleigh Convention Center. Tech's Sports Information Department will provide live coverage found at goldenbearathletics.com/coverage.
