Golden Bears defeat Point Park, 3-1, in RSC Tournament

Men's Soccer

BECKLEY, West Virginia -- No. 5 WVU Tech (8-9-2) will next face No. 1 University of Rio Grande (14-1-1) in a River States Conference Tournament quarterfinal after a 3-1 victory over No. 5 Point Park University (11-6), 3-1, Saturday evening in Beckley, West Virginia.

The teams were scoreless after the first 45 minutes of play with Tech marking four shots on frame and the Pioneers two. Senior Francisco Neto changed that quickly in the final half of play, scoring unassisted from 35 yards out in the 52nd minute. Neto now has 13 goals this season including four game-winning goals which ranks him No. 27 in the nation (NAIA).

Sophomore Eduardo Gutierrez was next, posting his first goal in 2017, to score for the Gold and Blue. In minute 75, the Madrid, Spain native found the back of the net also unassisted.

Gutierrez then assisted on the game's final score, dishing the perfect pass with less than five minutes in regulation to senior Mark Magallanes who recorded his second goal this season.

Freshman Jose Domingo Xam-mar (6-3) protected the Gold and Blue's goal for 90 minutes, saving four attempts while allowing just one goal. Point Park's keeper, Ryan Daniels, was forced to make 12 stops and allowed three goals.

As a team, Tech finished with 15 shots on frame compared to the Pioneers' six. The Golden Bears also held the advantage in corner kicks, 13-6.

WVU Tech will travel to Rio Grande, Ohio for a scheduled 7 p.m. kickoff. No. 6 Indiana University East (9-8-2) is at No. 2 Midway University (9-5-1) on Wednesday for the other RSC Tournament semifinal.
