BLUEFIELD, Virginia -- The Golden Bears fell to Bluefield College 62-53 Wednesday evening in Bluefield, Virginia. WVU Tech women's basketball now stands at 1-3 in 2017 while the Rams boost their record to 2-2. The teams are now split, 1-1, in 2017 as Tech picked up a season opening victory (November 1) 78-68 over Bluefield in Beckley, West Virginia.
Senior
Zjhane West poured in a team-best 18 points on 9-for-17 shooting from the field while recording five rebounds. West also had a game-high four steals towards Tech's ten total.
Sophomore
Laura Requena also hit double-digits, marking 11 points for the Gold and Blue. The Madrid, Spain is shooting 54.1 percent from the floor this season and averages 11.8 points per game. Requena also had four boards and is currently ranked No. 13 in the nation (NAIA DII) with 11 rebounds per game.
Freshman
Whittney Justice rounded out Tech's top scorers by producing six points Wednesday. Sophomore
Katelyn Byrd finished with five points and five rebounds while leading the team with three assists.
As a team, the Golden Bears shot 41.5 percent (22-for-53) from the field and 50 percent (7-for-14) from the bonus line. The Rams shot 46.7 percent (21-for-45) from the floor and 69.6 percent (16-for-23) from the foul line.
Tech held the advantage in points off turnovers (12-8), bench points (33-14) and second chance points (13-10).
The Golden Bears will next travel for the J&W Classic held in Charlotte, North Carolina Friday and Saturday. Tech will face Penn State Fayette and Penn State Worthington Scranton.
