BECKLEY, West Virginia -- Junior
Savannah Shamblin recorded her 1,000
th career point and WVU Tech earned an 81-74 victory over University of the Cumberlands Wednesday evening in the Beckley Raleigh County Convention Center. The Golden Bears boost their record to 7-6 while the Patriots move to 7-2.
Shamblin led all shooters with 28 points including three from beyond the arc. The Cross Lanes, West Virginia native now has 1,003 career points and is ranked (as of December 6) No. 34 in the nation (NAIA DII) with 30 three-pointers made. Shamblin went 7-for-10 from the foul line and dished a team-high four assists.
Freshman
Brittney Justice and sophomore
Carlie Biehl-Wilson also hit double-digits for the Gold and Blue, posting 14 and 11 points respectively. Justice finished with three assists and three rebounds while Biehl-Wilson pulled down eight boards and had two blocks.
Sophomore
Katelyn Byrd recorded a team-best ten rebounds to go with five points. Sophomores
Laura Requena and
Logan Dudley poured in six points each while Dudley had six rebounds and Requena marked four.
As a team, Tech finished 25-for-64 (39.1 percent) from the floor while the Patriots went 29-for-62 (46.8 percent). The Golden Bears outrebounded the Patriots, 45-26, and forced 16 opponent turnovers while grabbing seven steals.
Tech, who is 2-0 in River States Conference (RSC) play, will host Ohio Christian University (0-1 RSC) Tuesday, December 12 in Beckley, West Virginia.
