BECKLEY, West Virginia -- WVU Tech wrestling opened their home schedule Saturday afternoon in Beckley, West Virginia, hosting Liberty University and Southern Virginia University for a tri-match. The Golden Bears fell to the Flames, 39-11, before dropping the final match to the Knights, 27-24. Liberty finished 2-0 in Beckley, also defeating Southern Virginia, 38-12.
Senior
Paul Gonzales (125 pounds) and sophomore
Leland Swafford (157 pounds) were undefeated, 2-0, in Van Meter Gym Saturday. Gonzales, a Snow Hill, Maryland native, recorded a fall (2:24) against Liberty's Keegan Smith and earned a major decision (11-0) versus SVU's Aaron Freidhof.
Swafford, who hails from Beckley, picked up a win by fall (2:30) over the Knights' Zachary Davidson and earned six team points for Tech with a forfeit win against Liberty.
Freshman
Logan Robertson (133 pounds) recorded a technical fall, 19-3, over Southern Virginia's Jayson Cody while senior
Corey Palmer (174 pounds) defeated SVU's Keaton Gomez by decision, 4-3.
Next on the schedule, Tech will host St. Andrews University January 5 in Van Meter Gym.
