Hoopsters continue streak with win at Bluefield State

BLUEFIELD, West Virginia -- WVU Tech men's basketball trailed by as much as ten points in the second half but rallied back to earn their tenth consecutive win with an 82-61 score in non-conference action at Bluefield State College Wednesday evening. The Golden Bears move to 19-5 overall while the Blues fall to 5-17 this season.

Junior Kievonn Banks found himself at the foul line with 9:57 left to play and the Golden Bears trailing 50-51. Banks sank all three bonus shots to give Tech the lead, 53-51, and the team didn't look back. The Gold and Blue went on a 29-10 run to finish out the game that gave them the 21-point victory.

Junior Elisha Boone had an outstanding day, posting a double-double effort of game-bests 28 points and 13 rebounds. Boone finished 10-for-14 from the field, 8-for-10 from the free throw line and led the game with four steals.

Senior Ra'Shaud Kincaid was 4-for-8 from three-point range towards his 14 points while junior Ryan Atkins finished a perfect 5-for-5 from the bonus line and poured in 13 points. Atkins also pulled down eight boards.

Banks marked 12 points and eight rebounds off the bench after 24 minutes of play for the Golden Bears. Senior Patrick Gnagbo had three blocks in the game.

The Blues were led by Julian Hernandez who had 23 points on 9-for-18 shooting from the field. James Day had a team-best six rebounds.

Tech finished 26-for-65 (40 percent) from the field, 24-for-30 (80 percent) from the foul line but were held to just 6-for-20 (30 percent) shooting from beyond the arc. Bluefield State was outrebounded by the Golden Bears, 44-36 while Tech also held the advantage in steals, 12-4.

The squad will return to River States Conference (RSC) play Saturday, February 4 when they host the University of Rio Grande. The last time Tech (11-1) and the RedStorm (6-6) faced off in conference action, the Golden Bears took home the win, 82-69 (January 14).
