Tech splits doubleheader at Lenoir-Rhyne

HICKORY, North Carolina — WVU Tech baseball split a doubleheader to open a three-game series against Lenoir-Rhyne University in Hickory, North Carolina Saturday afternoon. The Golden Bears grabbed their first victory of the series 9-5 before falling in the final game of the day, 4-17.

Tech registered 13 hits from eight Golden Bears, including three each from senior Alex Kotheimer and junior Abraham Alejandro. Freshman Jacob Reimold also had a standout game at the plate, finishing 2-for-4 with three RBI, a homerun, a double and a run scored.

The remaining of the team's nine total RBI were credited to Kotheimer, Alejandro, seniors Tanner Levine and Brady Groesbeck and junior Wyatt Belinda (2). Alejandro marked Tech's other double while Kotheimer and Levine had a stolen base each.

Junior Jerod Jobst pitched 4.1 innings, giving up just five hits and two earned runs while striking out a batter for the win on the mound. Senior Jarron Monroe retired two batters while walking four after 3.2 innings of work and redshirt junior Garrison Vandeventer recorded a strikeout after 1.0 inning.

Game Two | Lenoir-Rhyne 17, WVU Tech 4 | Box Score

The team totaled six hits and four RBI after 26 at bats in the night cap's loss. Kotheimer and senior Doug Prather led the Golden Bears with two hits each. Reimold, who knocked another double, and Groesbeck produced the other hits.

Groesbeck drove in two runs while Reimold and Prather marked a RBI each.

Senior Jayson Sykora (0-2) was charged the loss on the mound, scattering nine hits and eight earned runs while striking out one batter in 1.0 inning of work.

WVU Tech will finish the three-game series in Hickory, North Carolina, Sunday at 1 p.m. with one, nine-inning game.
