BECKLEY, West Virginia -- WVU Tech women's basketball came away with a 73-67 River States Conference (RSC) victory over Asbury University to help stop a four-game losing streak. The Golden Bears boost their record to 10-10, 5-3 (RSC) while the Eagles move to 5-14, 2-7 (RSC).
As of January 18, the Gold and Blue hold second place in the RSC East, 3.0 games behind No. 21 University of Rio Grande. (RV) Indiana University East (4-3 RSC) and Point Park University (4-3 RSC) both sit behind Tech at 3.5 games back.
Junior
Alexandra Combs led the team's scorers with 14 points including a 4-for-4 effort from the bonus line. Sophomore
Laura Requena recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 13 points and 13 rebounds including seven offensive boards.
Freshman
Brittney Justice came off the bench to knock down 13 points and was a perfect 9-for-9 from the foul line. Justice also marked five rebounds, three assists and two blocks.
Junior
Savannah Shamblin poured in 11 points to round out Tech's top offensive contributors. The Cross Lanes, West Virginia native also dished a game-best six assists to go with five rebounds and two steals.
Sophomore
Katelyn Byrd pulled down seven rebounds while recording five points, three blocks and two steals.
The Golden Bears and the Eagles both finished 24-for-63 (38.1 percent) from the field. Tech went 21-for-24 (87.5 percent) from the foul line compared to their opponent's 15-for-24 (62.5 percent) effort. The Gold and Blue also outrebounded Asbury, 47-39.
The squad will stay at home for their next contest to host Midway University Saturday, January 20 at 1 p.m.
