KOKOMO, Indiana -- The WVU Tech volleyball team finished its 2018 campaign after a 3-2 battle against Brescia University during a quarterfinal of the River States Conference (RSC) Championship in Kokomo Friday evening. The set scores were 15-25, 25-21, 25-21, 22-25 and 14-16. The Golden Bears end with an overall record of 27-10 while the Bearcats move on in the championship at 22-16.
The team had four players hit double-digits in kills including a team-high 16 from junior
Carolina Bologna. Fellow junior
Katelyn Byrd recorded 15 kills while senior
Ana Monteiro had 13 and junior
Emily Kidd tallied ten.
Defense also played an important role in the match where Tech finished with a total of 106 including double-digits from sophomore
Sawyer Hawgood (38), juniors
Konstantina Pateli (18) and
Alice Amitrano (17), Monteiro (16) and freshman
Michaella Guyot-Polverini (10).
Pateli handled the ball again, dishing out a match-best 57 assists to go with three service aces and three block assists.
Brescia's attack was led by Natalie Jones who had a match-high 21 kills. The Bearcats finished with 107 digs.
At the championship, the conference announced All-RSC teams and awards where Pateli and Bologna were recognized for first-team accolades and Monteiro earned second-team accolades.
Also named was the 2018 RSC Volleyball Champions of Character Team. One player from each school was named as the team member who best displays the five character values of NAIA Champions of Character. Tech's Guyot-Polverini was honored with this award.
As of November 9, WVU Tech holds three top-20 rankings in the nation (NAIA) including No. 11 in total blocks (270.500), No. 17 in total kills (1,646) and No. 19 in total service aces (232).
Individually, Pateli is No. 14 in total assists (1,211) and No. 28 in assists per game (9.540) and Monteiro is No. 42 in total service aces (49).
