Baseball splits with Lawrence Tech first day, 1-1

BECKLEY, West Virginia -- WVU Tech baseball split a doubleheader with Lawrence Tech Sunday, defeating the Blue Devils, 3-2, in game one before falling in the night cap, 0-4. The Golden Bears move to 1-5 this season while Lawrence Tech holds a record of 7-4.

The Golden Bears tallied nine hits and three RBI in their first win in 2018 Sunday afternoon. The RBI were credited to freshman Calen Owens, sophomore Brian Schack and junior Corey Lewis.

Sophomore Kurt Latocha and freshman Kent Rooklin notched a double each while Rooklin also recorded a stolen base.

Senior Jerod Jobst drew the start on the mound, pitching 3.0 innings while striking out four, giving up five hits and two earned runs.

Junior Reed McNeer (1-1) earned the W after 3.1 innings, striking out three Blue Devils.

Freshman Calyb King pitched for the save, striking out two batters after 0.2 innings of play.

Tech saw six Golden Bears post one hit each including a double knocked by redshirt freshman Jacob Dingess.

Freshman Brett Linton (0-1) started on the bump for Tech, striking out eight Blue Devils in the loss.

Junior Juan Perez saw an inning of action towards a strike out while redshirt junior Ryan Bayle threw for three innings, retiring two via strikes.
