Comeback win propels Tech into semifinal of RSC tourney

BECKLEY, West Virginia -- (No. 2 East) WVU Tech men's basketball trailed (No. 3 West) Asbury University by as much as 23 points in the second half before earning a 94-90 River States Conference (RSC) tournament quarterfinal win. The Golden Bears (20-10) will next face (No. 1 West) Indiana University Southeast (22-7) Saturday, February 24 in a semifinal scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.

The Gold and Blue met IU Southeast during the regular season January 4, falling 74-66. Tech is currently ranked No. 25 in the nation (NAIA DII) while the Grenadiers are No. T13. IU Southeast defeated (No. 4 East) Carlow University, 105-53, to host the semifinal.

Freshman Andreas Jönsson sunk a three-pointer with 5:44 left to play for the equalizer, 78-78. The Grenadiers took over the lead again until junior Brandon Shingles poured in a bucket to knot the game 82-82 with 4:02 on the clock.

IU Southeast kept battling and Tech was forced to gain the lead again with 3:40 left to play when senior Michael Scott recorded a free throw for the advantage, 84-83. The Golden Bears didn't relinquish the lead after that, posting ten more points in the victory.

Shingles recorded a team-best 33 points including a 4-for-8 effort from beyond the arc. The Tallahassee, Florida native also pulled down eight boards and dished four assists.

Junior Thomas Collins finished with a double-double effort of 26 points and 11 rebounds while giving four assists and grabbing two steals.

Senior Michael Scott rounded out Tech's top scorers with 19 points to go with nine rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Junior Cole Schoolcraft produced a team-high seven assists and had three points for the Gold and Blue.

As a team, Tech shot 50.7 percent (37-for-73) from the field while pulling down 40 rebounds. The Golden Bears finished 92.9 percent (13-for-14) from the bonus line.
