VIENNA, West Virginia -- WVU Tech is one of the hottest teams heading into the River States Conference Tournament. The Golden Bears go in as the No. 5 seed and will take on No. 4 Point Park in the first round Friday at Jackson Memorial Park in Vienna. First pitch is set for 10 a.m. on Field 1.
The top eight teams in the regular season qualified for the double-elimination tournament. The winner will automatically qualify for the NAIA National Tournament.
Tech (23-25, 10-8 RSC) started slowly but finished the season with 11 wins in its final 13 games. Point Park is 14-18 overall and 11-7 in conference play.
The tournament features 10 games on Friday and at least four more games in Saturday's semifinals and finals. The championship round begins Saturday at 3 p.m. There will be two fields in operation all day Friday and during the first two games on Saturday.
No. 1 seed Rio Grande (32-11, 16-2) gets the tournament under way Friday when it faces No. 8 seed Ohio Christian (17-19, 5-13) at 10 a.m. Rio Grande claimed the RSC regular-season championship and with that has already clinched a bid to NAIA nationals.
The bottom half of the bracket begins at noon with No. 2 seed IU Southeast (24-12, 14-4 RSC) squaring off versus No. 7 seed Carlow (18-15, 8-10). The other first-round matchup at noon features No. 3 seed Midway (19-18, 11-7) versus No. 6 Cincinnati Christian (20-17, 9-9).
Three more tournament rounds will be held before play is complete on Friday. The loser's bracket begins with the first elimination games at 2:30 p.m. The winner's bracket games will begin at 4:30 p.m., and the second round of the loser's bracket will be 6:30 p.m.
Saturday play begins at 10 a.m. with the winner's bracket final and the loser's bracket semifinal. The loser's bracket final will come next at noon, with the winner getting back to the championship round beginning at 3 p.m. and, if necessary, at 5 p.m.
