BECKLEY, West Virginia -- The (RV) WVU Tech men's soccer team defeated University of the Cumberlands 2-1 Wednesday evening at the YMCA Paul Cline Youth Sports Memorial Complex. The Golden Bears stay undefeated with a record of 4-0-1 while the Patriots suffer their first loss of the season and move to 2-1-1.
Cumberlands was on the scoreboard first, posting their lone goal in minute 32 when Alejandro Gonzalez marked his first collegiate goal.
Tech found its rhythm in the second half beginning when junior
Gavin Shiels received the perfect pass from junior
Sergio Sanchez off a corner kick. Shiels then found the back of the net after drilling the ball from 35 yards out to knot the game 1-1 (62').
The winning goal came from freshman
Antonio Fernández Castaño in the 70
th minute who marked his first career score. Junior
Eduardo Gutierrez was awarded the assist to Castano.
In goal, junior Jose Doming Xam-mar (4-0-1) keeps a clean sheet after 90 minutes of play and one goal allowed.
For the Patriots, Clement May (1-1-1) earned the loss, stopping four Golden Bear attempts while allowing two goals.
The team completes its three-game home stand when they host Shawnee State University Saturday, September 8 in Beckley, West Virginia.
