BECKLEY, West Virginia -- No. 18 WVU Tech men's soccer took down No. 10 University of Rio Grande 1-0 in double-overtime Thursday evening. The River States Conference (RSC) win gives the Golden Bears their seventh consecutive W and a flawless record of 12-0-1, 6-0 (RSC) while the RedStorm fall to 11-3, 5-1 (RSC).
This victory, the first one Tech has captured over Rio since at least 2010, also moves the Gold and Blue into first place in the
conference standings with Point Park University (12-1, 5-0 RSC) 0.5 games back.
In a battle between two great squads, Tech's golden goal and the only one of the match came in the 103
rd minute from freshman
Fletcher Caponecchia. The assist was credited to fellow classmate
Jason Constable.
The goal is Caponecchia's second collegiate score and Constable posted his first career assist.
Tech's keeper,
Jorge Martinez (12-0-1), made four stops after a complete game that included a penalty kick attempt by the RedStorm in the second half.
Rio's net was protected by Richard Dearle who made six saves in 103 minutes of play.
WVU Tech will return to the pitch Saturday when they host Milligan College. They return to RSC play when they host Point Park University Thursday, October 24.
