BECKLEY, West Virginia -- WVU Tech men's soccer finished its 2019 campaign in an opening round game of the NAIA National Championship after falling to Madonna University 2-1 Saturday.
The Crusaders found the back of the net first, posting a goal in the 17
th minute from Yuri Farkas Guglielmi.
The Golden Bears answered back off a corner kick when senior
Sergio Sanchez soared the perfect ball to fellow classmate
Alvaro Tina in the 36
th minute.
The winning score came from Guglielmi again as he recorded the goal with 34 minutes left to play.
Tech's goal was protected by senior
Jorge Martinez who made two stops. Madonna's keeper, Joe Smith, grabbed the W in goal, making three saves.
The team finishes the season with an overall record of 17-1-2 and with five top 20 rankings in the nation (NAIA) including No. 10 in shots on goal per game (10.11), No. 12 in total shutouts (10), No. 12 in shutouts per game (.530), No. 18 in goals per game (3.16) and No. 19 in shots per game (18.00).
