No. 9 WVU Tech picks up 109-76 victory

Men's Basketball

PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania -- No. 9 WVU Tech men's basketball earned a River States Conference (RSC) victory at Carlow University, 109-76, Tuesday evening. The Golden Bears move to 22-4, 13-2 (RSC) while the Celtics hold a record of 1-26, 0-14 (RSC).

The Gold and Blue are No. 1 in the RSC East division, 0.5 games ahead of No. 13 Indiana University East (12-2 RSC). In the RSC West division, Indiana University Kokomo (11-4 RSC) is on top while (RV) Indiana University Southeast (10-4 RSC) is next at 0.5 games back.

Senior Brandon Shingles recorded a season- and game-high 31 points including hitting seven from three-point range. Shingles also dished a game-best seven rebounds to go with five assists and three steals.

A native of Tallahassee, Florida, Shingles is currently ranked No. 12 (NAIA DII) in total three-point field goals made (79), No. 20 in three-pointers made per game (3.160) and No. 23 in assist/turnover ratio (3.083).

Fellow senior Elisha Boone posted 21 points and had 12 rebounds for his 17th double-double this season.

Boone is currently No. 3 in defensive rebounds (8.560), No 4 in total rebounds per game (11.280), No. 5 in total rebounds (282), No. 29 in total scoring (479), No. 31 in offensive rebounds per game (2.720) and No. 33 in points per game (19.160).

Sophomores Andreas Jönsson and Tamon Scruggs came off the bench to pour in 14 and ten points respectively. Freshman Josh Whelan pulled down eight rebounds while Scruggs had four.

Three other Golden Bears currently hold top rankings in the nation (NAIA DII) including senior Cole Schoolcraft at No. 2 in assist/turnover ratio (5.000), senior Tommy Collins at No. 15 in free throw percentage (0.856) and sophomore Junior Arrey at No. 25 in total steals (45) and No. 32 at steals per game (1.800).

Up next, Tech will host Point Park University (8-14, 5-9 RSC) in more conference action Saturday, February 9 at the Beckley-Raleigh County Convention Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
