Tech goes undefeated against NCAA DII opponents at Classic

BECKLEY, West Virginia -- WVU Tech volleyball defeated four NCAA DII opponents during the three-day Concord Classic and senior Konstantina Pateli was named to the All-Tournament Team, an honor voted on by all participating coaches.

The Golden Bears now hold a record of 11-5 due to wins over West Virginia State University's  JV squad (3-0), Ohio Valley University (3-1), Concord (3-2) and Glenville State College (3-0).

Pateli handled the ball again for the Gold and Blue, dishing out 177 assists or 11.8 assists per set. Pateli also marked 42 digs, 23 kills, seven services aces and a block assist. Currently, the Athens, Greece native is No 3 in the nation (NAIA) for total assists (573), No. 4 in total service aces (28) and No. 25 in assists per game (9.710).

On the attack, fellow senior Katelyn Byrd led the team with 3.80 kills per set and 57 total over 15 sets. The Parkersburg, West Virginia native also had 36 digs, two block solos and two block assists and two assists. At this time, Byrd is No. 24 in the NAIA with 176 total kills.

Libero junior Sawyer Hawgood picked up a team-high 86 digs, posting 6.14 digs per set. Hawgood, who hails from Kamloops, B.C., Canada, recorded 11 assists and three service aces. She is currently No. 6 in the nation with 324 total digs and No. 21 with 5.590 digs per set.

Senior Carolina Bologna put down 38 kills during the classic and is also nationally ranked including No. 7 in hitting percentage (.359) and No. 33 in total blocks (48). The Vasto, Italy native had six block assists, three block solos, four service aces, seven assists and 12 digs.

Junior Valentina Abondano marked 36 kills, two block assists, 40 digs and six service aces. Senior Emily Kidd (25) and junior Ana Alonso Olea (23) also hit double-digits in kills for the Golden Bears.

At the net, Kidd put down three block solos and two block assists and in the back row junior Michaella Guyot-Polverini posted 32 digs and had seven service aces.

As a team, WVU Tech holds three top-ten rankings in the NAIA including No. 2 in total digs (1144), No. 8 in total kills (733) and No. 8 in total assists (674).

The Golden Bears will take a break from tournament play for now to begin River States Conference matches next, starting with a road trip to Point Park University Friday, September 27.
