Beckley, West Virginia – WVU Tech Fortnite players Contrax (Colson Ford, Fr.) and DAcoop70 (Jacob Cooper, Fr.) were all set and ready to play for their National Association of College Esports (NACE) Starleague Collegiate Series (duos format) season opener Sunday afternoon when a message came in via Discord that their match had been postponed to Saturday, October 8th. The decision was due to a technical issue, NACE said. Â
So instead, the pair joined up with Glenville State esports team member 200Skull (Marcus Tanner) to enter the Queasy Cup, a trio's format competitive tournament. The group competed in a non-school affiliated cooperative effort.Â
Fortnite, developed by Epic Games, is played competitively in a Battle Royale format, where up to 100 players fight to be the last person standing. In duo's format, players compete as a two-person team, while in trios they compete as a three-person team. Teams play in 10 matches over the course of a competition, earning points based on how long they last. Each team's total points at the end of 10 matches determines the finishing rank.Â
Over 10 matches, the trio scored 109 points, earning the squad a 2,263rd place ranking, within the top 10% of all competitors. Public competitions typically have between 70,000 and 100,000 entrees.
The duo of Ford and Cooper are now scheduled to kick off the NACE competition Saturday, October 1.
