LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- (RV) WVU Tech men's soccer earned its first win of 2023 at No. 8 Georgia Gwinnett College 2-1 Sunday afternoon during the Labor Day Grizzly Classic. The Golden Bears are now 1-1-1 while the Grizzlies move to 2-1-1.
Tech fell to Lawrenceville Technological University Friday 5-6 to kick off the classic. The Gold and Blue saw goals from freshmen
Vasco Berardo (Liboa, Portugal) and
Marc Hernandez (Argentona, Barcelona, Spain) who had two, junior
Layomi Ogunfowora (Nigeria) and sophomore
Julian Diaz (Uberlândia, Minas, Brazil). Assists were credited to sophomore
Arnau Rabassa (Sant Andreu de Llavaneres, Spain) and junior
Maximo Romagnoli (Córdoba, Argentina).
In goal against Lawrence Tech, sophomore
Luka Felix (Portugal) made four stops in 90 minutes. Felix finished with five saves and allowed just one goal in the complete game W against the No. 8 team in the nation (NAIA).
The first score from the Gold and Blue versus the Grizzlies came from Berardo who got the perfect pass from Hernandez in minute 50.
Ogunfowora found the back of the net off a free kick in the 67th minute to give Tech the 2-0 lead.
Georgia Gwinnett posted its lone goal in the 70th minute from Emanuele Sordi.
The Grizzlies' keeper, Andreas von Muecke was forced to stop three Golden Bear attempts while allowing two goals in 90 minutes of play.
WVU Tech will next host Milligan University this Thursday, September 7 at 7 p.m. in Paul Cline Stadium.
