Golden Bear softball rock long balls towards first W

MURFREESBORO, N.C. -- WVU Tech softball earned a 6-4 victory at NCAA DII Chowan University in game one of a doubleheader Sunday. Game two ended after 4.2 innings due to darkness and it will not count.

Tech's bats lit up in the third inning where they tallied all six runs. Senior McKayla Bartley (Pahrump, Nev.) started things off with a homer for the Gold and Blue. Junior Macy Wilkens (Greenville, Ind.) drove in the next four runs off a grand slam blast that brought in senior Scarlet Janney (Pearisburg, Va.), sophomore Olivia Barnett (Shady Spring, W.Va.) and senior Kyleigh Jackson (Hico, W.Va.). The final run came from another dinger, this time from freshman Abby Gates (West Columbia, S.C.) who nailed it to right center for her first collegiate home run.

Freshman Kaylie Lawrence (Greenup, Ky.) recorded her first collegiate W in the circle, throwing for 4.0 innings and striking out three batters. Senior Taylor Dickerson (Mt. Lookout, W.Va.) was awarded the save after 3.0 innings where she retired four opponents via strikes.

The Golden Bears will return to North Carolina next weekend when they travel to St. Andrews University for four games over Saturday and Sunday.
