No. 3 WVU Tech moves to semifinals after shootout thriller

BECKLEY, W.Va. -- WVU Tech women's soccer is moving on in the postseason. The No. 3–seed Golden Bears battled No. 6 Brescia University to a 0–0 draw through 110 intense minutes Wednesday evening before punching their ticket to the River States Conference semifinals with a 4–2 victory in penalty kicks at the YMCA Paul Cline Memorial Complex.

With the win, Tech improves to 11–4–3 overall, extending its winning streak to four matches and securing its spot in Saturday's semifinal matchup at Indiana University Kokomo.


Match Summary

WVU Tech controlled the run of play from start to finish, outshooting Brescia 22–4 and placing 13 shots on goal, while allowing just two Brescia attempts on frame. Brescia goalkeeper Laura Thompson finished with 14 saves to keep the match scoreless through regulation and overtime.

Tech's defensive unit delivered a composed postseason performance, conceding only four total shots in 110 minutes. Sandra Garcia Quilez anchored the back line with two saves and confident management of the box throughout both overtime periods.

The Golden Bears created multiple dangerous chances — including a crossbar strike from Rocío Gutiérrez in the 60th minute and late efforts by Julia Silva and Nora Martin-Mora Segura — but the final breakthrough never materialized before time expired.
